The best view of Tower Bridge and the pirate’s pub. 7 minutes on the tube from the Houses of Parliament, but 500 years away! Canute invaded from here, Gulliver sailed from here, and so did the Pilgrim Fathers. The Mayflower pub is still here, and a king’s palace, a prince’s tomb and Charles Dickens’s mortuary. The Eighth Wonder of the World is beneath your feet: first Thames Tunnel and one-time banquet hall, shopping arcade and fairground. Head down by the tiny doorway and scaffolding staircase, once locked and closed to the public.
