Once known as 'Sluts Hole' and 'Little Wapping', the 19th century Hammersmith riverside became home to William Morris and the arts and crafts movement. It was once home to an ex-queen, a king's mistress and an eighteenth century celebrity chef! Our walk will explore these characters as well as numerous other connections with artists and writers who have lived by the river, including Hogarth, Turner, John Donne, Thackery, Eric Gill and Eric Ravilious.

The area also has several links with printing; William Morris set up his Kelmscott Press here, whilst his close friend, printer Emery Walker, set up the Doves Press with T.J Cobden-Sanderson at nearby Hammersmith Terrace.
