Is it really true that the building of London’s early docks was driven by the belief that the riverfront was a hotbed of organised crime? Come and find out more about the history of London’s docks and see where over 10,000 of London’s poor were evicted so the docks could be built. Find out how social investigator Henry Mayhew chronicled the grim working conditions at the docks and how Dickens borrowed some of his characters. Learn about some of the most significant industrial action of the nineteenth century and see the location of one of the world’s oldest police forces. The walk will finish up at the first ever tunnel under the Thames.
