From its earliest days as a Roman military encampment, London’s strategic place beside the Thames brought the world to the City, and connected the City to the outside world. It was the highway by means of which the City’s trade developed and London grew to become a major world city.

This tour explores how the Thames aided the development of medieval London’s commerce and markets. It also sees how under the Tudors England reached out to the world and challenged established trading patterns. It ends on Tower Hill with the establishment of the Port of London as the greatest port in the world.
