Fancy a #CareersOnTheThames?

This year we worked with Thames Skills Academy, an organisation passionate about developing the inland waterways sector, including on the Thames. They ran their first #CareersOnTheThames event on a boat during Totally Thames 2018 in September, providing careers advisers and teachers with insights into the 95 miles worth of job opportunity along the river through talks and hands on experiences including in stabilising boats and securing ropes. The Maritime Minister, Nusrat Ghani MP spoke, as well as past and present apprentices to showcase the breadth of river based careers from deck hand to skipper, engineering, hospitality and customer service. The Thames Skills Academy are here to shine a light on the opportunities that await young people from all backgrounds.

  • “My job involves numerous things: HR, accouncanty, marketing, driving boats, sweeping decks, polishing glass, cleaning windows, sitting on the board of directors, and that's not all of it. The reason I like my job is because it is so diverse. ”
Chris Livett, Managing Director of Livett's Group
  • “You get to meet so many different people and interact with the public. Once you get to know everyone – it’s like a massive family here on the river. ”
Artem, Apprentice Boat Master, City Cruises
  • “I see the river at least once a day, and every day is different. I think everyone would be fascinated to know how much goes on behind the scenes of running a boat operators.”
    Sutha, Management Accountant, City Cruises
