Deptford Working Histories is a local residents' history project formed in response to the massive rebuilding programmes currently re-moulding Deptford and its population.

We’re delving into libraries and archives for historic information and combining this research with local knowledge to put on community events that broaden general awareness of the past present and future of Deptford.

Our walk will introduce you to a part of Deptford not so well trod as the “Deep - Ford” referred to in Roman times, that crosses into what is now Greenwich. Instead we will be taking you north of there, to a long and pleasant stretch of riverside which was historically important for ship building, and sea faring, and is now better known as the home of the UK’s most televised social housing estate - which reaches 50 years of age this year.

The historic dockyards are undergoing new housing development of a staggering scale, and several other large developments are also underway, including the new Green Way overlaying an old Canal route.
