The Thames has been a sacred river for thousands of years and has provided the setting for religious events of all kinds. Since 2008, the Hounslow Ganeshotsav Mandal has finished their annual two-day Ganesh Chaturthi by immersing an idol of Lord Ganesh - one of the Hindu deities - into the River Thames. The event is organised in partnership with the Thames Landscape Strategy and provides one of the most colourful and unusual happenings on the banks of the river in London. The immersion has been opened up to members of the public to come along and join in the prayers and dancing.
