Discover 10,000 years of history beneath your feet!

The lives of Londoners and the Thames have been inextricably entwined for thousands of years. Join a Totally Thames archaeological walk and see the remains of Tudor jetties, a Bronze Age bridge, an Iron Age fish trap and prehistoric landscapes, as well as mesolithic trees and more.

Totally Thames' archaeological walks are ticketed events. Booking is essential and unless otherwise stated, the walks are not suitable for young children. Ticket charges and booking fees apply. The Thames foreshore can be muddy and rocky. Please wear sturdy footwear.

Battersea
9am - 11am, Sunday 13 September. Ages, late-teens - adults

In Battersea you can discover evidence of the lost islands of the Thames. This area was also the location of many Victorian industries and evidence of these can still be found on the foreshore including the manufacture of cupels used in gold refining. Walk leader: Mike Webber.

Meeting Point: Battersea Bridge (Southern End), Battersea Foreshore, SW11

Bermondsey
8.30am - 10am, Monday 14 September. Ages, adults

Discover the maritime heritage of the south bank of the Thames, and find out about post-medieval ship breaking in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. If the tide allows, you may also get a glimpse of prehistory on the foreshore! Walk leaders: Eliott Wragg & the Bermondsey Foreshore Recording and Observation Group.

Meeting Point: Rotherhithe Overground Station, Brunel Road, Southwark, SE16 4LF

Follow in the footsteps of the boat builders and river men who made London the world's busiest port in the 1800s and a great maritime city. Find evidence of what they shipped in their vessels and take home a piece of history in your pocket. Walk leader: Dr Fiona Haughey.

Meeting Point: Founders Arms, 52 Hopton Street, SE1 9JH

Bankside
5pm - 7pm, Saturday 26 September. Ages, late-teens - adults

Bankside’s history is more intense than that of the City of London, the other side of the river. A heavy prehistoric presence is followed by the Romans and all periods through to today. It was the red-light district in the Tudor period and on the foreshore, evidence can be discovered of the money pots used in the many theatres found in the area. Come for an evening stroll and explore the varied life on the southern bank of the Thames through the age. Walk leaders: Dr Fiona Haughey & Mike Webber.

Meeting Point: Founders Arms, 52 Hopton Street, SE1 9JH
