On 15 June 1215, a King put his deal on a document promising to ensure good government. That document, known as Magna Carta, is seen as the foundation of the rights and freedoms widely enjoyed today. So how did it happen? Granting charters, razing castles, follow the story of 'bad' King John through the streets of the City of London.

Magna Carta Son et Lumiere
Saturday 19 September
From 8.15pm in the Guildhall Yard

The Magna Carta has influenced and underpinned constitutions throughout history. To mark 800 years of its creation, Guildhall Library is lighting up the City of London Guildhall with a Magna Carta Son et Lumière. The Guildhall School of Music and Dance have produced a composition of music and light inspired by the stories behind the Charter, gleaning influence from manuscripts in the City's archives and the Charter's relevance to the City. This will be projected onto the fine Hindoo-Gothis architectural facade of the Guildhall.

Magna Carta Exhibition
Thursday 17 September - Friday 2 October
9.30am - 5pm in the Guildhall Library

A chance to discover more about the Magna Carta and the City of London and investigate a variety of items from the Guildhall Library collections.
