The Illuminated River project aims to make riverside areas more attractive, encouraging walkers to enjoy the bridges and riverside areas at night, particularly communities who do not currently spend time by the river and bridges. Illuminated River artist Leo Villareal uses the latest LED technology to ‘paint with light’, producing patterns that play across the bridge structures at night, highlighting the architectural features and heritage of each bridge. Once completed, at 2.5 miles long and taking in 4.5 nautical miles of the River Thames, it will be the longest public art commission in the world.

Wildlife, sustainability and energy efficiency have been at the heart of decision-making in the project. Working closely with environmental organisations, Illuminated River aims to improve natural habitats for flora and wildlife and to ensure the project leaves a positive environmental legacy for London. Reducing excessive light levels and using more subtle LEDs will provide a better environment for all.

At the time of the walk it is hoped that work on the first 4 bridges – London, Cannon Street, Southwark and Millennium – will be complete. To help celebrate this ambitious project the Ramblers in London, in association with the Illuminated River project, will be hosting a free 3 mile walk along the route that will begin at Embankment Gardens entrance on Villiers Street (near Embankment station) and finish at the Founders Arms (near Blackfriars Station).

Why not come along to the walks and experience the project for yourself? In the meantime visit https://illuminatedriver.londo... to learn more about the project and https://www.innerlondonramblers.org.uk/ to find out about the Ramblers in London.
