Join Stephen, an expert Footprints of London guide, as he takes you along part of central London’s riverside and across bridges which join the City and Southwark on the south side of the river. This is one of the most historic stretches of riverside in London and it is full of fascinating stories.
London is here because the Romans found this was the first place it was easy to cross the Thames coming up from the sea. And for centuries London Bridge was the only crossing for tens of miles.
This walk explores the bridges which lead to and from the City of London between Blackfriars and Tower Bridge (although technically the latter is just outside the City). And we hear the story of how these bridges came to be built and paid for.
We pass a power station which is now the internationally famous Tate Modern Art Gallery and see important reminders from 16th century – the replicas of the Globe Theatre and the Golden Hinde galleon. We will go up the steps where Charles Dickens set the murder of Nancy in his novel Oliver Twist and hear why London Bridge was moved in the 1830s.
