Led by Dr Claire Harris, foreshore expert at Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA), discover the archaeology of this fascinating area of the Thames foreshore. Learn about the Royal Navy shipyard founded by Henry VIII and how it built ships until the reign of Queen Victoria. Find out about the site's subsequent role as a stockyard and the "gut girls" who worked there, as an American encampment in WW2 and in industrial disputes of the 1990s.
Please be aware that this event involves walking across uneven and muddy ground. It is not suitable for young children or people with mobility difficulties.
The walk will begin at 12pm (midday) by the top of Watergate Stairs, next to the Master Shipwright's House, Watergate Street SE8 3JF.
About Dr Claire Harris
Dr Claire Harris is a Palaeolithic and community archaeologist, with particular expertise in the Palaeolithic period of Britain and northern Europe. Her current role with Museum of London Archaeology is as Public Impact Officer focusing on the Thames foreshore. She was a member of the Thames Discovery Programme, one of the UK’s most successful community archaeology projects. She has extensive experience of archaeological excavations in both research and commercial archaeology settings, in Britain and around the world, and spanning from the Palaeolithic to the post-Roman periods. She worked at the British Museum in both curatorial and research roles, most recently as a post-doctoral researcher on the Leverhulme-funded Mapping Palaeolithic Britain project. From 2017 to 2021 she was post-doctoral research on Pathways to Ancient Britain at Queen Mary, University of London. She led a number of public engagement and collaboration projects including Neanderthals in Hackney: exploring north London’s Stone Age past, in partnership with Hackney Museum.
