Hidden behind Brentford High Street lies Lot’s Ait, now home to John Watson’s boatyard. In earlier times this small island was well known for its osier beds and willows and was also a good place for fishing. Brentford was a principal centre for freight transfer between the Port of London and Brunel’s Great Western railway before this industry declined with the coming of motorways. The island became a haven for wildlife after being abandoned in the 1980s and now John has established a traditional boatyard – building on a long history of boatyards in this stretch of the Thames. Come and hear John tell the story of boats on Lot’s Ait and also hear about the wildlife still on the island.
