The Thames Barrier was opened by her majesty the Queen on 8th May 1984. The Thames Barrier protects our city from being flooded by high tides and storm surges moving up from the North Sea. Once a year The Thames Barrier is operated over a full tidal circle. At three key times ( as above) you can see the Barrier in action. The Barrier is Built across a 520 metre stretch of river. The Barrier has four rising sector gates that span 61.5 metres and weigh 3,700 tonnes each and the two smaller rising sector gates span 31 metres.

The Thames Barrier is quite the spectacle and an impressive display and celebration of British design! An interesting and unusual day out, the closure offers visitors insight into how London remains operational as a modern city.

Small print: * Please note there is no access on the Thames Barrier structure.
