A parade of Thames Sailing Barges not seen in one place since the Industrial Revolution will gather in West India Docks as a popup museum, with the opportunity to get aboard plus activities for all ages. An unmissable celebratory event supported by the Shipowners' Club.
Thames Sailing Barge Parade
Saturday 17 September, 3.30pm
The City of London will be host to a spectacular historic parade of Thames Sailing Barges, recreating scenes from London’s days as a bustling trading port.
The majestic sailing barges will set off from the Docklands / Canary Wharf area, the heart of the modern financial district, highlighting that Britain became a financial powerhouse through the Industrial Revolution which Thames Sailing Barges were so much a part of.
The barges then hope to proceed in strict formation through the raised bascules of Tower Bridge into the Upper Pool, before lining up and setting sail (conditions permitting) for West India Dock.
Sailing Barge Open Day
Sunday 18 September, 10am - 6pm
West India Dock will become a Popup Museum, open free to the public.
Shoreside activities at West India Dock include full access to the partaking barges so the public can learn of the barges' history as well as meet, mingle, eat, wine and dine with barge owners, crew members, sponsors, donors, publicists and historians.
